I purchase most of the appliances you see in my videos
I started producing regular content about appliances on my channel in April 2023 as a way of using my existing skills (I used to work in radio and tv) whilst frequently moving locations as a military spouse and juggling long spells as a single parent! (my husband was deployed for most of 2023!)
Every video I make takes 30-40 hours to produce, which for a long time I did entirely on my own, but I have recently taken on a freelance video editor to help me for a few hours every week. I’d really like them to take less time to produce, but I find it very hard to publish something that isn’t finished to the standard I want. I have been known to scrap videos which are almost entirely finished and start again from scratch!
Although I am paid a share of YouTube’s ad revenue, it’s not big (about £4 per 1000 views!) and it varies wildly because of fluctuating views and the different rates advertisers pay at different times of the year. I also have costs, software subscriptions, equipment, endless chickens I buy to roast (!!) and the products I buy to make the videos, most of which I resell at a loss.
Sponsorship and gifting
Every week I receive emails offering to gift products or sponsor my content and I turn down about 95% of these. Sometimes because the products aren’t right for the channel and sometimes because the sponsors want editorial control of the content.
3 years in I work with companies in two ways.
(1) The occasional gifted product (about 15%-20% of my videos)
(2) Embedded sponsorships. These are paid sponsorship messages (like an advert) within the video
(3) Sponsored videos (none of these currently on the channel) Where the brand pays me to make a video about a product which otherwise might not feature on the channel. Always clearly disclosed
I always disclose if an item is gifted within the first 30 seconds of the video and I also always retain editorial control.
I’m quite new on instagram. You’ll see short videos there using the same appliances purchased for the YouTube channel and also videos clearly labelled as ads which have are being boosted by either the brand or Amazon and run as adverts. Although they are ads, I write the script and choose what I promote.
How you can support the channel
I understand that in an ideal world there would be no ads, sponsorship, memberships or gifted products, but that’s not a sustainable way of running the channel. There are a couple of ways you can help
• Purchasing through affiliate links
In the description for every video are affiliate links. If you make a purchase after clicking on one of these the channel earns a small commission at no extra cost to you. These affiliate earnings are really the lifeblood of the channel and even buying something completely unrelated to what is linked helps a lot!
For a small monthly fee, you get early access to videos (usually about 48 hours, or earlier if I’m on holiday)
Loyalty badges next to your name in comments and a credit in the video once a month

And for additional transparency, YouTube takes 30% of membership fees
