The Morphy Richards Saute & Soup Maker is a mid-range soup maker that promises healthy homemade soup in 21 minutes. It is easy to use and has a saute function which means you can prepare your soup from scratch in the jug.
Do you need a soup maker?
I’ve owned a soup maker for 5 years and like many people, before I owned one, I didn’t really understand what they were for. Now I tell people they are like washing machines. You can either stand over the sink and do your washing, or you can chuck everything into a machine and walk away. Soup makers are no different, a few minutes of preparation, then stick the ingredients in, put the lid on, and come back when it’s done.
If you work from home like me they are particularly useful because they allow you to nip into the kitchen, get lunch started, and return when it’s ready to eat. In the winter months, I make at least one batch a week, divide it up into portions, stick them in the freezer, and then throughout the week I can pull out different portions to eat for lunch.
Is it worth getting a soup maker with a saute function?
Soup makers are made with and without the saute function. If you have a saute function you can fry your base ingredients, like onions, in oil in the jug and then add the rest of the ingredients to the same jug. If it doesn’t have a saute function you need to fry the onions first in another dish on your hob and then add them to the jug. I personally always advise people to buy a soup maker with a saute function because it saves on time and washing up.
Using the Morphy Richards Saute & Soup Maker
The saute control for this soup maker is on the arm of the jug and the saute function only works when the lid is removed from the jug. This is great because it allows you to keep an eye on and stir your cooking ingredients. When you have finished sauteing, add the rest of the ingredients, put the lid on, and choose between smooth soup and chunky soup. (I always recommend this great little soup recipe book to get you started with soup ideas)
The program timing is automatic so when you press start, a countdown will begin on the lefthand of the display. On the right-hand side some rather cryptic symbols indicate which part of the program you are in, either heating or blending.
You’ll notice in the photo below that the soup maker also produces rather a lot of steam and condensation.
This model of soup maker has a serrated blade which the manufacturer say will stay sharp for 12 times as long as a conventional blade. The blade ensures the soup which is blended several times during the cycle, is incredibly smooth, but if for some reason you require further blending you can select “blend” and hold your finger on the power button.
Accessories and additional features
This soup maker does not come with any accessories, however it can be used to make stew, milkshakes and juice, though I have not tested it with any of those!
What are the upgrade options?
If you have the budget to stretch to one of Morphy Richards more expensive soup makers with a better display, consider the Total Control soup maker. There’s a review of that on our YouTube channel.
